tacking in the wind

todays ride was a wide loop in profile and thank goodness for that as the first half was almost entirely into the wind, I almost came to a standstill on a couple of occasions so fierce were the gusts. I was very thankfully to turn my back on the wind even if the route was entirely uphill. Here the blasts were to my advantage pushing me ever upwards, the only thing I think stopping me from getting a record time was having to stop to let (what's the collective noun for old people?) what felt like hundreds of old age pensioners all dressed in their best walking kit, it was like they had marched through Go Outdoors before hand, they were very polite though just very slow!
