the away day ride

Dan and I left the NWAlps today for a ride lead by @teeceboy. although the day started with freezing fog this soon burnt off and by the time we got to the rendezvous the sun was shining brightly, we were all set for a great road ride.
Ant had planned the route the night before based on one he rides a lot but with a few extra miles to it as he is in training for a sportive in March. We were a bit concerned that the route didn't involve a cake stop though! however Ant had a plan up his sleeve.
The route was lovely, predominantly on quiet lanes and only short stretches on the odd busier road, gently undulating and fairly smooth surfaces, there was a lot of standing water and puddles though, I was very glad of my mud guards, the only way i was getting wet was in the spray from the rider in front, if ever there was an incentive to stay near the front of the bunch that was it
At around 22 miles Ants cafe plan kicked in and we rolled up to his Mother in law's, she offered us coffee cake & tea but was concerned this wouldn't be enough for us and had already got a sponge in the oven!! so next we had lemon sponge too, warm and fresh and delicious! we were made so welcome it was a bit of a wrench to have to get off the sofa and back in the saddle and in the next few miles i did have a slight sugar rush and crash, two ,lots of cake however scrumptious isn't a great fuel for riding and i did crave something savory for a while.
It was a great ride and the route was spot on, thanks to Ant for guiding and his lovely MiL for her culinary skills
ride 8
40 miles
total 160

I was actually quite jealous of your mudguards, sorry about the spray. Great photos, great write-up. Thanks fella. You forgot to mention that Jonnie's TREK was on its debut!
