i've had skipping chain issues for the last couple of rides, so as the cassette is nearly 2 years old i thought that must be the culprit. i ordered a replacement cassette in 12/36 ratio (on a 1x9 set up) and a new chain and fitted it. as i took the old cassette off i noticed that for the past two years i had been mistaken, the old one was 11/34! i feel quite chuffed that i'd managed the climbs on a gear much harder than i thought it was. however, it wasn't all good news as this set up still skipped! so it could only be the rear mech or the shifter causing it. so, spare shifter added and so far perfect shifting, so the lovely bling XTR shifter has only lasted about 18 months before giving up the ghost :-(
